Rob Lombardi may not be the youngest firefighter in the Hurleyville Fire Department, but he is one of the newest.

A relative newcomer to Sullivan County - he and his wife moved upstate from Long Island to be closer to their son, a student at the Center for Discovery - Lombardi felt compelled to give back to his new hometown.

“I wanted to be a bigger part of the community,” he says. “And I wanted fellowship.”

While many of his firefighting peers measure their time in the department by decades and his is tallied by months, he has not been deterred. And if you’ve been thinking about joining the fire service, Lombardi this advice:

“Do it,” he says. “Anyone can help.”
